Full Description
Belton House was built in 1685-8 for Sir John Brownlow it replaced the old manor house that has originally stood there. The design of Belton House has often been attributed to Christopher Wren, although it is likely to have been designed by his contemporary and fellow member of the Royal Society, the soldier architect William Winde. The project supervision and execution was conducted by the mason-contractor William Stanton. {1}{5}
The house is built in Ancaster stone, H-shaped in plan with equally proportioned storeys, hipped roof with dormers, a balustraded platform and cupola. {6}
It was altered in 1777-8 by James Wyatt for Sir Brownlow Cust; internal alterations were undertaken c1816 by Jeffry Wyatville for the first Earl Brownlow. Between 1870-1900 more alterations were undertaken and there was some restoration of original features, this was possibly undertaken by J H Pollen.
