Full Description

A 17th and 18th century landscape park covering 270 hectares, with four hectares of 19th century ornamental gardens. The features illustrated in the classic 18th century book Vitruvius Britannicus remain: South Avenue 1.5 kilometres and the East (Belmont) Avenue two kilometres. There are formal gardens to the north of the house in part designed by C. G. Gibber. To the north-east there is a rectangular pool, with an 18th century temple and icehouse. The 18th century developments include the wilderness to the west with woodland, ruin, rockwork and cascade. Emes proposals of 1778 included ponds to the south-east and east of the house. In the late 19th century a formal parterre to the north of the house was re-established with a symmetrical plan, clipped yews and statuary. To the north-west there is a larger symmetrical area with a fountain (late 19th century) with a conservatory behind designed by Wyatville in about 1810. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{10} The area to the north, centred on SK 9353 3955, appears to have been parkland on the 1824 Ordnance Survey map, but is not parkland by the 1905 second edition Ordnance Survey map. {11}{12} An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in April and May 2010 during groundworks for a new road and a visitors' reception building. Late medieval pottery, brick, animal bone and a copper loop or tent ring were found. The brick and pottery were associated with two excavated paths that were part of the old garden. {13}{14} During archaeological monitoring for cable trenching, a post-medieval soil, containing 16th-17th century pottery was recorded and several sherds of medieval 11th-13th century pottery were also found. {15}{16}
