What is mud and stud?

Mud and stud is Lincolnshire’s answer to finding a way to build houses and other buildings using the resources which were available to ordinary people, in the immediate area where they lived.  They took the trees from the hedgerows, the straw from the fields (or reed from the fens) and the soil in their gardens, and they constructed compact, organic-looking houses which met all their needs.  Many mud and stud homeowners today report that their houses are warm in the winter and cool in the summer, so they obviously work!

Because these buildings have been standing for at least 150 years, you often find that they have been altered a lot by the many generations of people who lived in them.  This means that they can be very varied in their appearance, but all is not lost!  Click on the link below to download your copy of the Mud and Stud Spotters’ Guide [coming soon!], and then keep an eye out while you’re travelling around the county and see if you can identify any buildings.

If you do, please do let us know about it using the form you can find here.
