Full Description

A substantial foundation of dressed limestone blocks was encountered during a watching brief to the south of Lion Lodge on Belton Hall's estate in 2018. The foundation was discovered on the line of the modern track, approximitely 50m to the south of, and closely aligned to, the current location of the Hall's south gate. It measured at least 5.5m wide, and projected beyond the edge of the track on both sides. To the east of the foundation was a 1.05m long surface of limestone slabs. Overlying both the foundation and surface was a substantial demolition deposit containing loose mortar and limestone chunks, as well as fragments of brick and pantile of 18th-19th century date. A single potsherd of similar date was recovered from this deposit. Lion Lodge was said to have originally been built to the south of the gate in the approximate location of the foundation, and this may also account for the demolition deposit. An alternative interpretation is that this was the original location of the Grade II Listed South Gate of Belton Park (MLI95681). {1}{2}
