In 2025, creative writer Rosanna McGlone is releasing a volume of short stories entitled Old Bolingbroke: Through Our Imaginations inspired by the stories of some of the ‘feisty females’ documented within the Great Cowcher Book and the archives of the Duchy of Lancaster. The volume brings to life for modern readers stories of the medieval past, highlighting Old Bolingbroke’s importance, and the importance of Lincolnshire more broadly.
The voices of Alice de Lacy, Nicholaa de la Haye and Hawise de Quincy have long been supressed. Feisty Females offers a unique opportunity to finally hear their tales, in their own words. Echoing through the ages from their twelfth century beginnings, the lives of these, and other, medieval heroines are imaginatively retold.
Step inside to listen to eight gripping stories, a mix of fact and fiction spanning murder, mystery and medieval lepers. Nicholaa de la Haye fought the rebels for Lincoln Castle, but who was her greatest enemy? What is the real story behind the lifelong imprisonment of Gwenllian, an innocent woman who had committed no crime? And who was the feistiest female of them all?
The volume is due for release in June 2025. Watch this space for more information about where you'll be able to get a copy!
