The Exhibition

A co-created exhibition is now open for viewing in the Gas House, a building in Old Bolingbroke adjacent to the Church. The exhibition highlights the village’s connections to Henry IV, the only Lincolnshire King, and provides an overview of its importance to the medieval history of the Duchy of Lancaster. The exhibition features extracts and images from archives concerning the village and its residents; and histories of the Church and Castle. It also includes information on the Great Cowcher Book (commissioned by Henry IV c. 1402), a deluxe, illuminated register of titles for the Duchy of Lancaster, including great medieval earldoms of Lancaster, Leicester, Derby and Lincoln.

About the Gas House

The building that houses the exhibition was built in 1822 on the site of a former 16th century courthouse, although parts of the cobblestone floor may be medieval. Originally used as a school, the building is now known as the Gas House because it was used to produce gas lighting for the Church. Thanks to funding from East Lindsey District Council, Rural England Prosperity Fund and Old Bolingbroke PCC, the Gas House recently underwent a programme of restoration. The building now houses our exhibition and operates as a visitor attraction.
