Full Description
PRN 37138
The park is present on the Ordnance Survey surveyor's drawing of 1814. {1}
The well-wooded park of 400 acres is much admired for its beautiful undulations and is adorned with fine old woods and luxuriant plantations. The rivulet passing through it supplies several fishponds covering eight acres and there is in the park a spring, called St Christopher's Well, and said to possess medicinal virtues. {2}
Denton Park is recorded on the first edition 1888 and second edition 1905 Ordnance Survey County Series maps. {3}{4}
Around Denton Manor is a notable Georgian parkscape. In it are two springs, one pours from a lion mask set in a rusticated wall, the other is called St Christopher's Well and is a dim dank grotto opening onto the lake. {5}
The Tudor style gatehouse (PRN37829) at the east entrance gives a striking introduction to the park and a long avenue of horse-chestnuts leads up to the house. {6}
