Full Description

The site of a 16th century hall. {1} The manor at Denton was held by the Thorolds and, together with its house Denton Hall, was acquired by W. Welby in 1648. The original Tudor mansion was later castellated and given a Georgian façade before being demolished in 1870. {2} There is a print of the Hall by Claude Nattes dated 1803. {3} A large country house in parkland is visible on the Ordnance Survey surveyor's drawing of 1814 which is at a scale of two inches to the mile. It is also shown, and named as Denton House, on the Ordnance Survey one inch the mile map. This map, published in 1824, is based on the OS 1814 drawing. {4}{5} Denton Hall is a large and handsome stone mansion standing on a fine elevation in a well wooded park of 400 acres. The Hall was nearly all rebuilt in 1816 and 1817. {6}
