Wishing Well, 1823 wellhead. {1} Known locally as the 'wishing well', this is an artificial cave built into the north bank of a large pond. The interior is 4m in diameter by 2m high, lined with cemented rubble stone, and at the back is a circular, 0.5m diameter, well with an overflow channel funneling out through the entrance into the pond. Set above the well into the wall of the cave is a poem- inscribed stone, dated 1823. {2} St Christopher's Well is a dim dank grotto opening on to the lake. Inside are ammomites, coloured stones, and verses ending: 'approach you then with cautious steps/ to where the streamlet creeps/ or ah! Too rudely you may wake/ some guardian nymph that sleeps/ 1823'. {3} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
