Description

A geophysical survey was conducted on around 40ha. of land on the route of the proposed Grantham Southern Relief Road to inform its construction. A group of ditch- and pit-like remains probably associated with the Romano-British settlement of Saltersford were identified. Some more isolated features were also noted, including part of a probable ring ditch at the western edge of the survey area and several small clusters of probable pits in the centre of the route. A triangular enclosure with an apparent opening in its southwest side was also identified. {1}{2} Subsequent trial trenching (see ELI14800 and ELI14801) confirmed the presence of both the triangular enclosure and the ring ditch, though no evidence was found for the isolated possible pit clusters in the centre of the route and it is likely that these anomalies were geological or modern in origin.
