Full Description
Ring ditch visible as slight cropmark in field to the east of the Great North Road. {1}
During a programme of trial trenching in May-June 2013, a large infilled curvilinear ditch was discovered in the location of the cropmark. Aligned approximately northeast to southwest, curving towards the west, it measured 6.6m wide and at least 1.2m deep, with a wide step on the northwest side. A single sherd of Late Iron Age/Roman pottery was recovered from the lower fill of the feature. A further 10 sherds of Roman pottery, mostly greyware, were recovered from the upper fill. {2}{3}
The northern half of the ring ditch was identified during a magnetometry survey in 2013. The western side of the ditch appeared less distinct, possibly because of plough damage, while a possible entrance was visible to its north. {4}{5}
