Full Description
Second World War coastal artillery battery, used to inspect suspect merchant ships approaching the Lincolnshire coast. The battery was comprised of at least one, and possibly two, six-inch gun emplacements, with linked ammunition magazines, a battery office or command post, barracks (see MLI125865), engine room (see MLI125866) and observation post (see MLI43289). Associated with the battery were two coast artillery searchlights (see MLI43288 and MLI125927). The site and its approaches were guarded by at least four pillboxes, two of which are still extant (see MLI43286, MLI43290, MLI125867, and MLI125928), with lines of concrete anti-tank cubes (see MLI43287 and MLI43296) and scaffolding poles used as anti-invasion craft obstacles (see MLI126793), to block the approaches from the north, west and the beach respectively. The defences at the battery site were thought to have been supplemented later in the war with the addition of a Z Battery anti-aircraft rocket system. The battery is thought to have been manned by soldiers from the 349 Coast Battery Royal Artillery up until 1941, with the nearby Sykes Farm being used to accommodate some of those men (see MLI120277). The majority of the former battery structures were demolished shortly after the war, with only fragments of concrete remaining to mark the locations of some of the former structures. {1}{2}{3}{4}
