Full Description

Former Second World War barrack block, built for personnel manning the nearby Gibraltar Point Coastal Defence Battery (see MLI43285). {1} Initially built as a barrack block, the building is thought to have been converted to be used as a NAAFI facility in about 1941, after the establishment of the anti-tank artillery training range at Gibraltar Point (see MLI125932). The establishment of this new range necessitated much greater provision of accommodation for soldiers in this area, which was met with the siting of a large number of Nissen huts around the edge of the paddock to the immediate south of Sykes Farm (see MLI 120277). After the war, the building is thought to have been used as a private house for several years, until floods in 1953 led to the structure being abandoned. The building later became the clubhouse for the Gibraltar Point Sailing Club. The building is single-storey, and is constructed of red brick with a pitched pantile roof. When originally built, the exterior of the building was painted with a camouflage design, although almost all of this paintwork has now (2021) faded. {2}{3}
