Full Description

Crown Mills is of four storeys and with a chimney of 19th century. It is mentioned in Domesday as the site of a mill. The interior has a reused date stone of 1716 but the building is probably all mid and later nineteenth century. The waterwheel survives. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} Mentioned as being the site of a mill in Domesday Book. Interior has datestone (re-used) of 1716, but building mainly dates from mid and late C19. One of the few remaining examples in the area of a large town mill. Retains the waterwheel, but uses a Gilkes turbine as an auxiliary. Externally, a building of 3 and 4 storeys in red brick with Welsh slate and pantile roofs. Segmental- arched windows. Crown Mills, stables and cottage form a group. Crown Mills was visited by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. The building has been significantly altered and almost no evidence of the original 19th century interior survives apart from the roof structure and basic footprint. Floods in 2007 had caused damage to the ground floor of the mill complex, and extensive renovation and removal of historic fabric has detracted from the historic and architectural interest of the buildings. As a result, the decision was made to remove Crown Mills from the National Heritage List for England. The watermill is of red brick with a slate roof, decorative barge boards and wooden finial. The waterwheel and the auxiliary Gilkes turbine engine were removed when the mill was converted to dwellings and offices. {7}{8}
