Full Description

Mill Cottage was visited by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. The building served as the former mill office for the Crown Mills, and although not itself listed, it formed an important part of the mill complex. Floods in 2007 had caused damage to the ground floor of the mill complex, and extensive renovation and removal of historic fabric has detracted from the historic and architectural interest of the buildings. As a result, the decision was made to remove Crown Mills from the National Heritage List for England. Mill Cottage is situated to the north of the main mill building, on the north side of the River Lud, and has been converted to a dwelling. It was likely built at the same time as the Crown Mills, in the mid to late 19th century, and is brick built with a slate roof, tall ridge stack and decorative barge boards. It is rectangular in plan and appears to have retained much of its historic fabric with its original openings having been respected through conversion. The entrance to the cottage is in the gable with a wood panelled door to the right, two sashes to the left and a small arched window in the apex of the roof. Each side elevation has two sash windows and one in the rear gable. The decorative barge boards and finial match those on the main mill building. {1}{2}
