Full Description

4 Crown Mills was visited by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. The building served as the former weigh house for the Crown Mills, and although not itself listed, it formed an important part of the mill complex. Floods in 2007 had caused damage to the ground floor of the mill complex, and extensive renovation and removal of historic fabric has detracted from the historic and architectural interest of the buildings. As a result, the decision was made to remove Crown Mills from the National Heritage List for England. The building is a three-bay, two-storey building of red brick with a pantile roof, built in the mid to late 19th century. It has a central panelled door within a gable porch, a singled glazed door to the right and a four-panel glazed door, with glazing bars to the left. On the first floor are three casement windows. All doors and windows are 20th century replacements but some appear to respect the position of the original openings, although all have been enlarged. The river-side gable has casement windows on the ground and first floor, and a circular attic light within the apex. A chimney was added to the opposing gable when the building was converted to a dwelling. {1}{2}
