Full Description

PRN 41143 The Church of St Margaret, Sibsey, retains arcades of five bays with Norman (1066-1200) scalloped capitals, square abaci and single step arches, and a Norman north doorway. The west tower is Early English in date. The church also retains some Perpendicular (1180 to c.1520) and Decorated features. It was restored in the 19th century. {1}{2}{3}{4} A church is mentioned in the Domesday Book. {5} During a watching brief, several undated fragments of disarticulated bone were recovered from excavations in the tower and churchyard. The lack of archaeological features and articulated bone suggests the bone fragments may derive from elsewhere in the churchyard. {6}{7} A watching brief in the churchyard revealed a possible foundation for the porch. As there were no associated finds it is impossible to say whether these foundations belong to the current porch, which was constructed in 1699, or whether they belong to a possible earlier porch. Unstratified pottery of mid 15th century and later date was also recovered. {8}{9} A parish church with evidence dating from the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and 1699. It was restored in 1840.
