Full Description

The settlement of Sibsey is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to Ivo Tallboys. A church is also recorded. {1} 'Sibsey' probably means 'Sigebald's island of land' from the Old English. {2} A geophysical survey was carried out on land east of Main Road. Some of the anomalies identified have been interpreted as medieval and post-medieval occupation along a north-south road somewhere to the west. Ridge and furrow remains were also identified. A large positive anomaly seems to represent the remains of a kiln or a structure which was burnt down. Late medieval and post-medieval pottery was recovered during a site visit. {3} During trial trenching and a watching brief, linear features were recorded, mainly on a north-north-west to south-south-east alignment. This alignment reflects the alignment of the A16, and NOT that of Old Main Road, suggesting that Old Main Road is of relatively recent origin. Features revealed by the excavations included a pond, boundary ditches and rubbish pits dating to the medieval and post medieval periods. Evidence suggests that some of these features were levelled with rubbish deposits in the 17th/18th centuries. The postulated kiln structure tentatively identified by geophysical survey turned out to be a pond filled with post medieval dump deposits. {4}{5} During a watching brief at Sibsey Free School (TF 3525 5098), two pottery sherds of 13th-14th century date were recovered. {6}{7} Further traces of the ridge and furrow were identified to the south of Sibsey in August 2012, during lidar assessment of the proposed route of a new water pipeline between Miningsby and Boston. The remains were identified as a series of parallel linear earthworks, aligned on a roughly east to west axis. {8}
