Abstract/Summary
Archive for a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising twenty two trial trenches excavated along the route of the proposed Grantham Southern Relief Road to inform its construction. In the western half of the site, evidence of the Iron Age to Roman settlement of Saltersford was encountered, including demolition debris, a ditched rectilinear enclosure and the remains of two possible hearths or ovens. A nearby small quarry of probable Roman date gives a likely source of the observed limestone building rubble. Further east, the remains of another possible building were identified, along with further metalled surfaces and occupation layers. Finds recovered included pottery of Iron Age-Roman date, ironworking slag and animal bone, as well as a single coin of 4th century AD date. Further to the northeast, two undated parallel ditches possibly forming opposite sides of an enclosure, were revealed.
