Description

Twelve trial trenches were excavated along the route of the proposed Grantham Southern Relief Road to inform its construction. Twenty two trenches were planned, but ten were excavated in a second, later phase due to access restrictions at the time of this investigation (see ELI14801). In the western half of the site, evidence of the Iron Age to Roman settlement of Saltersford was encountered, including demolition debris, a ditched rectilinear enclosure and the remains of two possible hearths or ovens. A nearby small quarry of probable Roman date gives a likely source of the observed limestone building rubble. Finds recovered included pottery of Iron Age-Roman date, ironworking slag and animal bone. {1}{2}
