Full Description
An Anglian urn cemetery discovered in 1851 and partially excavated by Trollope in 1863. Trollope found ten urns full of calcined bones at a depth of about one foot. They were between five and eleven and a half inches in diameter; some were ornamented with raised knobs and one with concentric circles. Two pairs of iron shears and a fragment of bone comb were found in or associated with the urns. On a previous occasion a bronze fibula brooch had been found in an urn on at the same spot. {1}{2}
During a drought the farmer had noticed square structures showing as cropmarks. {5}{7}
Excavation in 1966 produced evidence for a small inhumation/cremation cemetery of the mid fifth to late sixth century. Of the forty-four pots, sixteen came from in situ positions. {12}
Evaluation of the site in 1989 established that the full extent of the cemetery had been excavated in 1966. A watching brief in 1994 at Urn Farm revealed no further evidence of the cemetery. The only Anglo-Saxon remains were several sherds of redeposited pottery. htm 8m
Fieldwalking was undertaken in the field adjoining Urn Farm and east of King Street in order to establish the approximate location of the Anglo-Saxon cemetery. Several pieces of Saxo-Norman pottery were recovered. {13}
