Full Description

FIELDWALKING IN SELECTED AREAS REVEALED A PRE-DOMINANCE OF SAXO-NORMAN AND LATER MEDIEVAL POTTERY. MEDIEVAL GRAVEL WORKING WAS EXTENSIVE - SEVERAL OBLONG PITS WERE FOUND DUG INTO THE GRAVELS CONTAINING ANIMAL BONE AND MEDIEVAL POTTERY. {1} DURING A WATCHING BRIEF IN 1994-5 EVIDENCE FOR LATE MEDIEVAL ACTIVITY WAS REVEALED. PREHISTORIC-ROMAN DITCHES HAD BEEN REUSED IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD. A STONE WATER TROUGH WAS FOUND, AND TOGETHER WITH PITS, CONTAINED C13-14 POTTERY, INCLUDING WASTERS. PREVIOUS EXCAVATIONS HAD FOUND EVIDENCE OF MEDIEVAL QUARYING WITH THE RESULTANT PITS BEING USED FOR RUBBISH DISPOSAL. A SIMILAR PATTERN OF EVENTS CAN BE RECOGNISED HERE WITH EXTENSIVE SAND AND GRAVEL EXTRACTION CONSEQUENTLY DAMAGING EARLIER ARCHAEOLOGY THAT MAY HAVE EXISTED. {1}{2} DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE REVEALS POTTERS IN BASTON IN C13. IN 1275-6 TWO POTTERS WERE FINED FOR DIGGING IN THE AREA OF THE KING'S HIGHWAY AT KATE'S BRIDGE. {3} During a watching brief on land adjacent to Greatford Road (at TF 1090 1380) medieval pottery and a single tile fragment were recovered from the topsoil and are thought to represent a manuring scatter. Pottery type include Bourne A, Stamford ware and South Lincolnshire sandy ware as well as early post medieval Bourne D ware. {4}{5}
