Full Description

A FEW SHERDS OF ROMAN POTTERY - GREYWARE AND COLOUR COATED WARE - WAS FOUND DURING EXCAVATIONS OF THE SAXON CEMETERY (33387). {1}{2} THERE WAS AN EVALUATION OF THE SITE IN 1989, DURING WHICH VERY LITTLE ROMAN POTTERY WAS FOUND, AND NONE WAS FROM THE FEATURES. HOWEVER, SINCE THE EXCAVATIONS METAL DETECTOR USERS HAVE FOUND A SCATTER OF SMALL LATE ROMAN COINS IN THE TOPSOIL ON THE SPOIL HEAPS. {3} DURING A WATCHING BRIEF AT URN FARM IN 1994 ROMAN ENCLOSURE DITCHES WERE IDENTIFIED WHICH CONTAINED MOSTLY EARLY ROMAN POTTERY (ALTHOUGH 1 SHERD OF C3-4 MORTARIA WAS RECOVERED. IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE ENCLOSURES MAY HAVE BEEN FOR AN AGRICULTURAL PURPOSE. {4}{5}, HTM 8M
