Full Description

IN THE SILT ZONE THERE ARE LATE IRON AGE FEATURES; A SERIES OF GULLIES, SOME OF WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN NATURAL UNDULATIONS IN THE NATURAL SOILS, AND A SHALLOW DITCH WERE IDENTIFIED TOGETHER WITH A LARGE RUBBISH PIT. ALL THESE FEATURES CONTAINED IRON AGE POTTERY AND ANIMAL BONES. ALSO, A HANDFUL OF SHERDS WERE FOUND DURING FIELDWALKING. {1} A WATCHING BRIEF WAS CARRIED OUT AT URN FARM IN 1994, DURING WHICH IRON AGE ENCLOSURE DITCHES WERE IDENTIFIED, WITH IRON AGE POTTERY. IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE ENCLOSURES HAD AN AGRICULTURAL PURPOSE. ALSO SMALL SCALE IRONWORKING EVIDENCE WAS ALSO NOTED. {2}{3} An undated ditch and pit were identified during a watching brief in 1999 on land adjacent to Greatford Road (TF 1090 1380). They may be associated with the Iron Age remains identified to south and discussed in this record. {4}{5}
