Full Description

Post-Medieval and modern remains of 18th-20th century date were recorded at this location during a programme of trial trenching between December 2003 and January 2004. The evaluation encountered a line of large pits of uncertain function. Misfired bricks were recovered from the backfill of these features, perhaps suggesting that they originated as clay extraction pits for nearby brickmaking. The majority of post-Medieval remains identified were agricultural in nature, including ditches, pits and post holes. {1}{2} A second phase of trial trenching to the south of this, conducted in May 2006, encountered post-Medieval features including pits filled with burnt deposits containing slag and fragments of hearth lining. These are almost certainlyindicative of small-scale ironworking associated with the neighbouring farmstead (MLI124496). {3}{4} Open area excavation was conducted at this location between October 2007 and May 2008, revealing more post-Medieval features including the near-complete skeletal remains of a pig and a number of drainage or boundary ditches. Material including clay pipe fragments, window lead, a buckle and copper pins were recovered from a substantial east-west aligned ditch. {5}{6}
