Title An Archaeological Excavation in Connection with Residential Development off Peterborough Road, Langtoft
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1998

Abstract/Summary

Archive for an archaeological excavation conducted on land off Peterborough Road, Langtoft, prior to residential development on the site. Two discrete areas were excavated. In the northern area, Medieval or post-Medieval field boundaries and refuse pits were encountered. To the south, a dense intercutting group of ditches and pits was encountered including a possible ring ditch and a rectangular enclosure with internal postholes, both of Iron Age date. These were cut by a number of Romano-British parallel ditches and refuse pits. A single undated ditch cut by the enclosure ditches also suggested an earlier phase of activity on the site. Evidence of Medieval and post-Medieval activity was also encountered, including a probable post-Medieval northwest-southeast aligned trackway represented by two parallel ditches which ran through both areas. The archaeology continued to the south and west of the excavated areas, though no further work appears to have been conducted.
