Full Description
During geophysical survey in December 1996, a series of anomalies representing possible field boundaries and a ditched enclosure were encountered on land to the west of Peterborough Road, Langtoft. {1}
Subsequent trial trenching in early 1997 revealed pits and ditches of Iron Age/Romano-British date representing likely settlement activity. Several sherds of Iron Age pottery and a coin dating to the first half of the 4th century AD were recovered. {2}
A group of features of Iron Age date were revealed during an archaeological strip, map and record in December 1998-January 1999. A concentration of postholes possibly representing a structure were encountered within a ditched enclosure measuring approx. 60m x 45m. A possible partial ring ditch was identified to the west of the enclosure, though only a short length extended out from the western limit of excavation. Further north, several small waste pits likely associated with this enclosure were encountered. A later phase of likely Romano-British ditches and pits was identified, some truncating earlier features (see MLI127391). {3}{4}
