Author/Originator
Date/Year 2016

Abstract/Summary

Archive for the excavation of twelve trial trenches, dug to inform proposed residential development on land off Gainsborough Road, Lea. The trenches were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior magnetometry survey (see ELI12996), and confirmed the presence of a number of ditched features, probable enclosures and former pits in this area. Finds recovered from some of the features indicated a mixture of Roman and medieval dates for this activity, although several of the features produced no dateable material and their origins remains uncertain. A further assemblage of redeposited artefacts was also recovered from subsoil deposits across the site, comprising sherds of Roman, medieval and early post-medieval pottery, along with a single likely late prehistoric flint.
