Full Description

In 1599 Sir Edmund Anderson bought the Manor of Lea from the Dalysons. The Andersons' mansion is said to have contained 17th century, as well as later, fabric. In 1855-7, J.L. Pearson carried out extensive alterations to the Hall, which was demolished in 1972. In 1964 Pevsner described the Hall as early 17th century but much altered in 1857. The north and south fronts still had their Jacobean gables, but the south front centre of four bays was 18th century. The entrance, in the traditional way, led into the hall at one end, where the screen once stood. {1}{2} The formal gardens, comprising terraces, walks and ponds lying east of Lea Hall, are partly recorded on early OS map sheets and may survive in the woodland. The lay-out is shown on an estate plan of 1826. {3} A particular, dated from 1913, records that the property at Lea Hall extends to about 2200 acres. {4} A small assemblage of redeposited post-medieval artefacts was recovered in September 2015, during a field walking survey of land off Gainsborough Road. This assemblage was comprised of a small number of early post-medieval pottery sherds, from a range of different vessel fabrics and forms, including a piece of imported Westerwald stoneware of mid 17th to 18th century date, and two fragments from late 17th century clay smoking pipes. {5}{6} A further redeposited sherd of early post-medieval pottery was recovered in December 2015, during a subsequent phase of trial trenching on land off Gainsborough Road. The sherd was a small piece from a Brown-Glazed Earthenware jug or jar of late 16th to mid 17th century date. {7}{8}
