Full Description
A number of possible former ditches and enclosures were revealed in this area in September 2015, during a magnetometry survey of land off Gainsborough Road. These features were identified as a series of linear and curvilinear magnetic anomalies, including one nearly circular anomaly near to the centre of the site. No conclusive date could be offered for these features, however, and their origins remains uncertain. {1}{2}
The presence of a number of ditched features, probable enclosures and former pits in this area was confirmed in December 2015, during a subsequent phase of trial trenching on land off Gainsborough Road. Although some of the features could be dated to the Roman and medieval periods (see PRNs 58158 and 58141 respectively), no dateable material was recovered from the majority of the investigated features, and their exact origin remains uncertain. Analysis of environmental samples taken from these features also proved inconclusive, with the quantity of identifiable material recovered being too small for detailed study. {3}{4}
