Full Description
Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow to the south of Lea, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1}
A number of magnetic anomalies, thought to represent the remains of a number of possible former enclosures and ditches, were recorded in this area in September 2015, during magnetometry survey of land off Gainsborough Road. Although no conclusive date could be offered for these features, it was thought likely that some could relate to the medieval activity in this area. A small assemblage of redeposited medieval artefacts was also recovered during a field walking survey, conducted on the site at the same time as the geophysical survey. This assemblage was comprised of a single sherd of mid 12th to mid 15th century pottery, a single fragment of 13th to mid 16th century medieval roof tile, and a single silver half-penny of Henry VII. {2}{3}
The presence of a number of ditched features and probable enclosures in this area was confirmed in December 2015, during a subsequent phase of trial trenching on land off Gainsborough Road. Although many of the features could not be dated (see PRN 58157), the handle from a Humber Basin ware jug of 14th to mid 16th century date and fragments of medieval tile were recovered from the fills of two of the ditches in the centre of the site, suggesting a date for some of this activity. Analysis of environmental samples taken from these features proved inconclusive, however, with the quantity of identifiable material recovered being too small for detailed study. A further small quantity of redeposited medieval pottery was also recovered from subsoil deposits across the site. This assemblage comprised three sherds from a large Late Medieval Toynton ware jug, dating from the mid 15th to mid 16th centuries, and the handle from a North Lincolnshire Fine to Medium Sandy ware jug of 13th to 14th century type. {4}{5}
