Full Description

A number of possible former ditches and enclosures were revealed in this area in September 2015, during a magnetometry survey of land off Gainsborough Road. These features were identified as a series of linear and curvilinear magnetic anomalies, located at the western end of the surveyed area. No conclusive date could be offered for these features, however, and their origins remains uncertain. {1}{2} The presence of a number of ditched features and probable enclosures in this area was confirmed in December 2015, during a subsequent phase of trial trenching on land off Gainsborough Road. Although many of the features could not be dated (see PRN 58157), sherds of early Roman grey ware pottery were recovered from the fills of several of the ditches at the eastern end of the site, suggesting a date for some of this activity. Analysis of environmental samples taken from these features proved inconclusive, however, with the quantity of identifiable material recovered being too small for detailed study. {3}{4}
