Full Description

Town Farm was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the building was deemed to be of modest architectural interest, and is plainly detailed externally and internally. Town Farm is a former dwelling house of mid 19th century date with an attached stable, both now empty. The buildings are built of brick with a roughcast render coating, an interlocking concrete tile roof covering, and two brick ridge chimney stacks. The building is two-storey, with a linear plan, with no internal access between house and stable. Access to the upper floor is by means of a stair built against the rear wall and the house is entered by means of a doorway at the north end of the building enclosed within a shallow porch. Three doorways provide access to the buildings via an adjacent courtyard, to the immediate west of Lee Street. In the attached stable, all fixtures and fittings have been removed, but the outline of stall partitions and semi-circular hay racks are visible on the side and rear walls. {1}{2} Otherwise known as 2 Lee Street, this building was the subject of historical research, conducted in September 2015, when a heritage statement was produced to inform its proposed demolition and subsequent redevelopment of the site. The building was in a relatively poor condition at the time of the survey, with some of the windows boarded and deterioration of the building's fabric evident. The building forms the eastern side of a courtyard, with the other sides formed by a range of other outbuildings, including a separate privy structure, all linked by attractive matching curved brick walls with imposing gate piers. {3}
