Full Description

A house, marked 'Vicarage' on the Ordnance Survey map, which was reputed to have been built for Samuel Dashwood as the dower house to Well Hall. It was constructed in the mid 18th century and underwent alterations in the early 19th century including possible re-facing to almost all the exterior, and in the 20th century. It has a hipped 19th century slate roof with overhanging eaves. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Claxby Hall was the subject of historical research, conducted in May 2015, when a heritage statement was produced to inform proposed repair works and alterations. The building is believed to have been constructed by James Bateman in 1752, as a dower house for the nearby Well Vale House (see PRN 47663). The structure has a number of late 18th or early 19th century extensions, and was subject to major remodelling in the 1830s, and more limited alterations in the 20th century. The building was used as a vicarage from 1836, when the rectory at Well was vacated, until 1935. Claxby Hall was severely damaged by fire in November 2011, when most of the roof structure and ceilings of the first floor were destroyed. {2}
