CLAXBY WILLOUGBY ROAD TF 47 SE (south side) 5/3 Claxby Hall (formerly 3.2.67 listed as The Hall) G.V. II* Marked "Vicarage" on OS map. House. Reputed to have been built for Samuel Dashwood as the Dower House to Well Hall. Mid C18, with early C19 alterations including possible re-facing to almost all the exterior, C20 alteration. Hipped C19 slate roof with overhanging eaves. Set on a plinth. Garden, probably C18 entrance front, with 2 stacks to the rear. 2 storeys, 6 bays. The central 2 bays slightly project. 2 low glazing bar sashes. Either side are 2 smaller glazing bar sashes with 6 similar sashes above, all under cambered arches. Between the floors on the right side is an ashlar coat of arms. East front now entrance front of 2 bays with single central pilaster buttress. Doorway with part glazed door, glazing bar overlight, panelled reveal, bay leaf frieze and small hood. To the left is a single early C20 opening with glazing bar sash. Above are 2 tripartite glazing bar sashes, all sashes under cambered arches. North front with projecting red brick and pantile single storey range and adjoining a red brick and pantile single storey 3 bays barn, later converted for domestic use, with single ridge red brick stack and coped gables. Interior has many fielded panel doors and some fielded panel reveals. Good suite of rooms comprising former entrance hall with panelled walls, panelling decorated with egg and dart. The elaborately decorated ceiling with stylised shell and foliate motifs. Cornice enriched with dentil and egg and dart. Fireplace with decorated pulvinated frieze. The overmantel being a foliate decorated frame to hold a portrait. 4 doorways lead off, each with pulvinated acorn leaf frieze and cornice. 2 further rooms each with panelling to walls. Early C19 decorative ceilings and egg and dart cornices. Fireplaces with decorated pulvinated friezes. Present entrance hall with ashlar fireplace with keystone. Staircase with decorated ceiling with coat of arms including Muscovy ducks. Dentil, fleuron and egg and dart cornice. Open well staircase with turned balusters and foliate decorated vase newel, carved tread ends and moulded mahogany handrail. The dado interspersed with pilasters.
