Full Description

A park recorded on the first edition c.1880 and c.1905 Ordnance Survey maps as Boultham Hall, Moorland, Lincoln. {1}{2} The park appears to have been created in 1830 as part of the Boultham Hall estate belonging to the Ellison family, and originally covered a much larger area than it presently does. In 1857 the ornamental lake was created and other features such as the fountain were added. In 1913 the grounds were sold for housing development, and much of the area of the original park is now covered by housing estates. In 1929 the hall and its remaining grounds were aquired by the City Corporation and opened to the public. In 1936 heated greenhouses were built (these no longer remain) and a year later the bandstand was constructed. In the 1960s many features from the older park were removed, and many of the current features including the tennis courts and bowling green were added. The grand wrought iron gates at the main entrance were originally part of John Shuttleworth's estate, and were bequethed to the City Corporation on his death. They date from 1895. Part of the original red brick park boundary wall remains nearby. {3} The gates at the entrance to the park come from Monks Manor in Lincoln which was built and owned by Joseph Ruston and the gates have the initials 'JR' woven into their design. {4} The reference to John Shuttleworth above (Source 3) is probably an error but the source does not provide any reference to where the information came from. The gates are clearly from Joseph Ruston's estate. {5}
