A photographic building recording and watching brief was undertaken of the Engine Shed in May 2005 prior to conversion and extension of the building to the University of Lincoln's student union. The Engine Shed was built in 1874-1875 to replace two previous engine sheds. It was used for this purpose until October 1964 and housed a steam breakdown crane. Adjacent. But detached from the Engine Shed is the water tower which incorporated the pump house, boiler room and oil room. By 1903 the fitting shop, driver's room and office had been built between the water tower and engine shed. These continued in use until after the Engine Shed, possibly until after 1978 and were demolished in 2005. Five single brick wide walls were revealed during the watching brief on the excavation of foundation trenches. These were surmised to be from the fitting shop, driver's room and office. {2}{3}
