Full Description

An extensive Romano-British settlement straddling Ermine Street around Fox Wood. At present it is under continual ploughing which is clearly damaging the site, but it is under threat of even greater disturbance through improvements to Ermine Street (now the A15). The road is slightly out of its straight line, and there may have been substantial Roman buildings which made the road veer off slightly. Stone is turned up by the plough over a considerable area and finds are extensive. Some traces of cropmarks have been noted, but it is not a good 'cropmark' site. Finds from the site include coins of Iron Age and all periods of Roman date; bronze brooches and other small finds, intaglio, milestones and a great deal of pottery and tile debris. The site is scheduled, and there are numerous aerial photographs taken of the site. {1}{2}{3} The parish files, Ordnance Survey and SMR cards contain details of Roman finds from the site, including numerous coins (some of which are probably from hoards), jewellery, pottery (both coarse and fine wares), metal statuettes (some of which may be votive), glass vessels, spindle whorls, hypocaust fragments and a small stone altar. {4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{10}{11} A stone coffin complete with skeleton was found at about SK 9708 8665 and reported in August 1994. The coffin was identified as probably Roman. {12} A one-piece brooch of early Colchester type, dating to the first century was found in the area in 1978. It was recorded at Norfolk Museum on 29 May 1998. {13} A hoard of early Roman coins was found in this area in c.1953, by the side of Ermine Street. Ten coins survived, which were all denarii, ranging from issues of Mark Antony to Lucius Verus (43 BC - 169 AD). The coins were donated to Lincoln Museum in 1973 (Hoard Index No.28). {14}{15}{16}
