Summary

SITE OF A POSSIBLE ROMAN FORT AT OWMBY CLIFF

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

PRN 51134 FAINT CROPMARKS OF PART OF A DOUBLE-DITCHED REGULAR ?RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE POSSIBLY WITH ROUNDED CORNERS UNDERLYING ERMINE STREET, SEEN ON PAUL EVERSON APs OF 1979. BEN WHITWELL SUGGESTS THAT THIS IS A POSSIBLE MID C1 MILITARY SITE PREDATING THE CONSTRUCTION OF ERMINE STREET. EARLY ROMAN FINDS ARE KNOWN FROM THE OWMBY CLIFF SITE, BUT NONE OF A DISTINCTIVELY MILITARY TYPE. {1}{2}{3}{4} A LETTER FROM GRAHAM WEBSTER HOWEVER NOTES THAT A BRONZE CUIRASS HINGE FROM OWMBY IN SCUNTHORPE MUSEUM IS A FITTING FROM THE LORICA SEGMENTATA NORMALLY (THOUGH NOT EXCLUSIVELY) WORN BY LEGIONARIES. HE SUGGESTS THAT THIS IS AN INDICATION OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A C1 MILITARY SITE AT OWMBY. {5} THIS IS ALSO THOUGHT TO BE PART OF THE PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENT. {6}, HTM 52M
