Full Description

Part of a possible milestone of lincolnshire limestone. Described by Tom Baker as cylindrical, with a height of 39 inches and a diameter of 11 inches, with the top 12 inches on the face grooved to a depth of 2 inches. Found in a field, now in the garden of the house at Owmby Cliff Farm. {1} John Peterson considers it to be complete but is clearly not 39 inches long but 30cm (should this be 93cm as it is about 36 inches). One end has a central square hole, the other a central round hole. John Peterson suggests it might be from a machine such as a roller; but that it is possibly a boundary marker. If it is Roman, it may be a 'terminus mutus' (an uninscribed stone similar in shape to the 'rotondi pedales'). {2} In 1964 Seaman reported that the resident, who had lived at Owmby Cliff all this century, said the 'Roman milestone' was a garden roller erected vertically and capped with a mill stone. {3}
