Full Description

THE REMAINS OF THORNTON LE MOOR WERE DESTROYED IN 1964. FROM EARLIER APS, THEIR CONFIGURATION EVIDENTLY EXTENDING THE PRESENT E-W STREET PATTERN E IN A REGULAR 2 ROW LAYOUT. MEDIEVAL POTTERY HAS BEEN FOUND. THE TWO HAMLETS OF CAUTHORPE AND BEASTHORPE WERE ALWAYS RECORDED WITH THORNTON LE MOOR, EXCEPT IN 1563. THE THREE SETTLEMENTS HAVE A MINIMUM POPULATION IN 1086 OF 18, AND HAD AN AVERAGE POPULATION DURING THE MIDDLE AGES. {1} A MEDIEVAL STRAP HANDLE, PRICKED ORNAMENT, GREEN GLAZE ON ORANGE FABRIC, GREY CORE WAS ALSO RECOVERED. {2}
