Full Description
The collection of 50,000 artefacts from three adjoining fields in the parishes of North Clifton, Nottinghamshire, and Newton-on-Trent indicated severe plough damage to a site of late Mesolithic to late Neolithic/early Bronze Age date. Much Beaker pottery was found during fieldwalking, although none was found during the excavations. Area K revealed evidence for Mesolithic or early bronze occupation, including four substantial post-holes (features similar to this were found in area K), with a trench running parallel with possible post-settings. Pits and post-holes were also discovered. Area K contained 2 pits, post-holes and a series of post-settings within a pit produced early Bronze Age artefacts. This site could represent intermittent occupation, perhaps seasonal, during prehistory. {1}{2}{3}
Trial trenching in 2011 identified three pits and a ditch of likely Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. The pits appeared shallow and were thought to indicate sporadic prehistoric activity in the area. A sherd of probable early Bronze Age pottery was recovered from one of the pits. {4}{5}
