Full Description
The collection of 50,000 artefacts from three adjoining fields in the parishes of North Clifton, Nottinghamshire, and Newton-on-Trent indicated severe plough damage to a site of late Mesolithic to late Neolithic/early Bronze Age date. In area E four substantial post-holes (features similar to this were discovered in area K) with a parallel trench with possible post-settings were found, which were possibly of Neolithic date. Pits of Neolithic or Bronze Age date, with post-holes, some cutting the pits and others being close by. One contained Grimston ware type pottery of early to mid Neolithic date. In area K a post-hole, pit and post-settings within a pit contained Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts. This site could represent intermittent occupation, perhaps seasonal, during prehistory. {1}{2}
Also found at SK 823729 were stone axe fragments which were sectioned: 1 lava, 2 group VI banded, 3 group VI medium 'associated with extensive Neolithic flint industry'. {3}{4}
Trial trenching in 2011 identified three pits and a ditch of likely Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. The pits appeared shallow and were thought to indicate sporadic prehistoric activity in the area. Small fragments of Late Neolithic pottery was recovered from one of the pits. {5}{6}
