Full Description
The collection of 50,000 artefacts from three adjoining fields in the parishes of North Clifton, Nottinghamshire, and Newton-on-Trent indicated severe plough damage to a site of late Mesolithic to late Neolithic/early Bronze Age date. The 1980 excavation was located where a large quantity of late Mesolithic flintwork had been found whilst field walking. In the excavated area a roughly ovoid structure 7.6m by 4.8m, defined by nine post-holes was revealed. Flint-knapping waste contained within the structure was from the manufacture of late Mesolithic microliths. The distribution of Mesolithic artefacts respecting the outline of the structure suggests that it may be associated with this period.
Also in another trench, four substantial post-holes of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date, were running parallel to a trench with evidence for post-settings. Features similar to this were found in area K. Four pits, containing waste, post-holes, pits were also discovered. This could represent intermittent occupation, perhaps seasonal during the prehistoric period. {1}{2}{3}
Two sharpening tools, some microburins and some microliths are recorded at SK 825 728 in the Colonisation of Britain Project. They are in the Retford Museum. {4}
