Abstract/Summary

Report on a geophysical survey and field walking survey, conducted to inform proposed residential development on land off Gainsborough Road, Lea. A small assemblage of redeposited medieval and post-medieval artefacts was recovered during the field walking survey, including a single silver coin of Henry VII. Extensive magnetic anomalies relating to recent disturbance, boundaries and services were recorded by the geophysical survey across large parts of the site, although some features of potential archaeological interest were revealed in the western half of the surveyed area. These features were identified as linear and curvilinear magnetic anomalies, thought to represent the remains of a number of possible former enclosures and ditches of uncertain date. Subsequent trial trenching in this area confirmed the presence of a number of ditched features, probable enclosures and former pits in this area. Finds recovered from some of the features indicated a mixture of Roman and medieval dates for this activity, although several of the features produced no dateable material and their origins remains uncertain (see ELI12998).
