Full Description

Lea expanded rapidly during the 20th century, as a suburb of Gainsborough. Its core is principally along the main through road, with minor re-alignments of that road that can be documented in the 19th and 20th centuries. This probably represents a re-orientation, though 90 degrees from an east-west axis, with St Helen's at the east end of the main street that formerly continued west of the main road line and is marked by a footpath. Creation of the Anderson's Mansion, taking over the south-east part of the village in the 17th century, and the growing importance of the Gainsborough Road are the likely moving factors. {1} Geophysical survey and a watching brief centred on SK8268 8692 recorded several post-medieval pits, containing pottery, coal, and a piece of fuel ash slag. {2}{3}{4}
