Full Description

In 1953, at Lakeside Cottage, a grave 'of rough hewn stones around the side and slabs over it' was discovered under the wall on the east side of the garden. Other human bones had been found in the same garden where a water main was laid in the paddock and when an electricity pole was erected prior to 1953. In 1982, the North Lincolnshire Archaeological Unit excavated a double cist burial at SK 9452 8592, and a charnel pit just to the north. A further ten graves were subsequently located but left unexcavated: all were stone-lined and oriented east to west. They appear to be post-Roman and Christian in character. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7} An excavation recovered 1745 fragments of disarticulated human bone, representing at least ten adults and possibly seven sub-adults. Some of the bones in the assemblage showed evidence of degenerative joint disease, trauma, non-specific infection, and possible porotic hyperostosis. Six stone-lined east to west aligned graves were also excavated, containing three males and three females. The graves were in two rows, indicating that the cemetery was planned. All the graves were shallow, with the skeletons resting directly on the bedrock. The skeletons were supine and extended, with their arms crossed over the stomach area. Four of the skeletons had pillow stones supporting the skulls, the pillow stones indicating a late Anglo-Saxon date. Two skeletons had stones placed in their mouths, and another had stones over the eye sockets. These burial rites date the graves to the 10th to 12th centuries. Some of the graves cut earlier graves, indicating that the cemetery was used over a long period of time. Residual early to mid Anglo-Saxon pottery was recovered from some of the grave fills, indicating a post middle Anglo-Saxon date for the burials. [See also PRN 54587]. {8}{9}
