Full Description
Sections of pre-Roman multiple (particularly triple) linear ditches, and related linear features, have been noted along the Jurassic Spine in Lincolnshire, as cropmarks visible in aerial photographs.The sections of ditches are thought to be part of the Jurassic Spine Prehistoric route way or boundary system. They most often appear as cropmarks, although some sections survive as earthworks, and usually as triple parallel ditches. Some of the sections have parallel ditches with a paralle pit alignment (see PRN 34086). The dating of the ditches is uncertain, but clearly pre-Roman, as Romano-British field systems overlie the linear features in some areas. The social and historical context of these boundaries is a matter for informed speculation in the present state of knowledge. Excavation of random sections across the ditches in the past produced little useful information, but this is hardly surprising with non-settlement features. {1}{2}{3}
