Full Description

Cropmarks of a linear boundary system, running between Nettleham Glebe and Danby Hill. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7} Excavations of part of the system were conducted in 1979. The investigations revealed that the ditches were cut into the natural soft limestone and clay and were remarkably shallow. The two flanking ditches were of similar dimensions and cut slightly into the solid bedrock in places. The middle ditch was slightly narrower. The cropmarks indicated that the ditches were discontinuous, and a terminal of the middle ditch was found. The east ditch appeared to have a narrow causeway. A series of post holes, four of which contained stone packing, was found lying between the flanking ditches. The post holes seemed to echo the line of the west ditch, forming some sort of structure with a possible screen or fence to the east side. A further series of post holes was found, but these were without a coherent structure. {8}
