Full Description

The church of St John the Baptist in Sutterby is Transitional or Norman in origin with Perpendicular and later additions and rebuilding. It is now disused and maintained by Friends of Friendless Churches. {1}{2}{3}{4} A disused parish church which was probably built in the 12th century and underwent alterations in the 14th century. It was constructed of dressed greenstone and has some red brick patching and slate roofs. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} There is a note in the early 18th century Diocesan census return that the Chancel was in need of repair at that time. {6} A historic building survey was conducted of the Church of St John the Baptist in 2011. The church consists of the nave, chancel and south porch, and features a blocked Norman doorway in the north wall. Window tracery dating from the late medieval period is present and there are wall paintings that still survive. The porch was built in 1743 and re-uses two 14th century stone mouchettes. {7} The remains of a chamfered stone plinth was exposed at the base of the western church wall in May 2014, during the excavation of trial trenches by the Spirit of Sutterby community project. The plinth extended approximately 2m to the west of the current wall, largely matching its orientation and length, but was not present on the northern side of the church. It was made of local Spilsby sandstone, with traces of mortar on the surface of some of the stones suggesting the removal of masonry, and likely reflects an earlier phase of the building, now largely lost to the later alterations. {8}
